L’impeccable M. Grumiaux

A l’occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, le 21 mars 1921, Decca a publié un beau coffret de l’intégrale des enregistrements réalisés pour Philips par le violoniste belge Arthur Grumiaux, de 1950 à 1985.

Arthur Grumiaux c’est une légende. En Belgique, c’est un intouchable. Comme son illustre aîné Eugène Ysaye. Ses enregistrements sont souvent cités comme des références comme son partenariat avec Clara Haskil dans les sonates pour violon et piano de Beethoven.

Moi-même, avant d’acquérir ce beau coffret, j’avais dans ma discothèque, une bonne partie de ces « références ». Je m’aperçois que je les avais peu écoutées, que, lorsque je voulais écouter du beau et grand violon, ce n’est pas Grumiaux que je choisissais spontanément (mais plutôt Ferras, Milstein ou Heifetz).

Depuis que j’ai reçu ce coffret, et que je réécoute… ou parfois découvre certains de ces enregistrements, j’éprouve des sensations mitigées.

C’est incontestablement du très beau violon – on sait que Grumiaux surveillait de très près le montage et demandait aux ingénieurs du son d’être toujours plus en avant ! -, élégant, « classique » dans la meilleure acception du terme.

Mais cette recherche du beau son se fait au détriment d’une prise de risque, d’un engagement interprétatif plus éloquent.

C’est particulièrement audible dans cette prise de concert du concerto de Beethoven (à Paris avec Antal Dorati !) ou le premier des deux enregistrements qu’Arthur Grumiaux a réalisés du concerto de Brahms, avec Eduard Van Beinum et le Concertgebouw (en 1958).

Je pense que l’on comprendra mieux mes réserves en comparant ces deux versions du concerto pour violon n°3 de Saint-Saëns

Le finale de ce concerto – écrit pour Sarasate ! – implique virtuosité, panache, élan. Ce qu’on entend dans la version Grumiaux, il faut le dire pas du tout aidé par la direction « plan plan » de Manuel Rosenthal, n’est pas exactement cela !

Nathan Milstein – depuis longtemps ma référence – prouve qu’on peut, qu’on doit oser dépasser la barre de mesure !

On doit aussi observer que le répertoire enregistré d’Arthur Grumiaux est à l’image de son jeu, pas très ouvert et peu aventureux : aucun concerto du 20ème siècle, à l’exception, certes notable, du néo-classique concerto de Stravinsky et d’un bien timide concerto de Berg (pourtant dirigé par le grand Igor Markevitch), mais ni Bartok, ni Prokofiev, ni Sibelius, pour ne pas parler de Chostakovitch ou Szymanowski… Voir le détail complet du coffret ci-dessous*

Restons-en donc à ce qu’on aime de l’artiste, comme son duo légendaire avec Clara Haskil.
