Mon ami Lionel Bringuier ne cachait pas sa joie de revenir diriger, il y a une quinzaine de jours, dans ce lieu mythique qu’est le Hollywood Bowl à Los Angeles.

En 2023, c’est Louis Langrée qui, remplaçant un jeune chef empêché, conquit le public et la critique de ce festival permanent d’été

Pour mon premier grand voyage dans l’Ouest américain, en juillet 1999, j’avais réussi à obtenir des billets (à des prix prétendument populaires, mais déjà élevés !) pour un concert sobrement intitulé Vive la France !. Avec un chef que je connaissais un peu par le disque, John Mauceri, et un invité surprenant qui y faisait ses débuts, le mime Marcel Marceau (1923-2007). A vrai dire, je venais moins pour la musique, même si écouter l’orchestre de Los Angeles (qui joue un soir sur deux sous son nom, l’autre soir comme « Hollywood Bowl Orchestra », question de contrats !) est un plaisir qui se goûte, que pour l’ambiance de ce gigantesque pique-nique en plein air ! Je n’avais pas gardé un souvenir impérissable de la prestation du chef ni même du mime. Je n’étais pas le seul si j’en crois cet article du Los Angeles Times que je viens de retrouver : Movies, Marceau Give French Accent to Bowl.

Felix Slatkin ou la grande époque

Pour les discophiles comme moi, le Hollywood Bowl Orchestra est à jamais associé à un chef disparu pourtant dans la fleur de l’âge à 47 ans, Felix Slatkin (1915-1963), père d’un autre grand chef américain Leonard Slatkin qui fête dans quelques jours son 80e anniversaire. Il y a quatre ans, j’avais évoqué un magnifique et très précieux coffret de 13 CD qui regroupe le legs discographique de Felix Slatkin avec « son » Hollywood Bowl.

Quand on consulte le détail des enregistrements (voir ci-dessous) on reste songeur et surtout admiratif de l’art fait d’autant de rigueur que de charme de Felix Slatkin, dans des répertoires qui ne se limitent pas au seul continent américain
